ASSOCIATION of MENTAL HEALTH FAMILIES
WHO ARE WE?
The ASSOCIATION of MENTAL HEALTH FAMILIES was established in Israel in 2016 by family members of individuals coping with mental illness.
The purpose of the Association is to aid and assist the individuals and their families in a number of ways:
broadening public awareness of the variety needs of the mentally ill and their families
establishment of rights for the care and cure of mentally ill individuals
psychological, medical and bureaucratic support along with providing means to deal with mental illness
inclusion and rehabilitation of the mentally ill in the community during and following recuperation
The activity of the Association is based on the belief that every mentally ill individual has the right to receive care by his family in the best way possible with the full support of public health care resources. The involvement of the families serves to improve the care and rehabilitation of the individual who suffers from mental problems. This is why it is of utmost importance to provide the families with appropriate means to deal in the most effective way with the challenges they face.
ASSOCIATION ACTIVTIES – A THREE PRONGED EFFORT:
1. ASSISTANCE for FAMILIES
The Association provides personal assistance for both individuals and groups.
The Association maintains courses and groups that provide information and tools to deal with common problems the struggling families face including hospitalization, rehabilitation, developing new skills, ways of communication, and methods of problem solving.
In the framework of the project "Families Supporting Families", family members with experience in dealing with these situations, assist families in need of support.
2. REPRESENTATION of FAMILIES DEALING WITH ESTABLISHMENT ORGANIZATIONS AND INSTITUTIONS
The Association works to enable family members to gain access to public establishments – hospitals, health care organizations (Kupat Holim) and rehabilitation centers in order to represent the coping individuals and their families who best serve to represent those individuals’ needs.
3. SOCIAL AND POLITICAL AWARENESS
The Association helps in advocating, by means of participation, in planning committees, discussions and meetings of leading officers in the local and national health departments, as well as rehabilitation centers.
We are active in promoting the rights of the coping individuals and their families in different areas. for example, the common concern of all caregivers: "After me – who will continue to provide care?” That is finding solutions for employment, housing, multiple handicaps, necessity for hospitalization, struggle against limitations in rehabilitation centers, isolation when the current family caregiver can no longer fulfill that role.
We welcome your interest for more information about our activities. To support and/or join the Association, please see contact information below.
